HAMLETS
Welcome to Ompah Siding
Ompah Siding
Ompah Siding was a small hamlet about four kilometres north-west of Snow Road Station. It served many purposes. It was used to a) allow trains to meet and pass; b) serve as an area where boxcars could be left for local residents to load with their goods to be taken to market, such as pulpwood, tanning bark, sawn lumber, and other products; c) store maintenance equipment pertaining to the train; d) load water needed for steam; e) drop boxcars and then shuttle them up the McCarthy grade.
It is believed that the one house at this location was known as the “white house”. There was another log house across the meadow known as the “black house”. There was an Orange Lodge here as a central place for many residents to meet. All buildings are gone.
